Beyond Recycling: Discover the Thoughtful Choice of Upcycling

リサイクルだけじゃない。アップサイクルという、やさしい選択を始めてみませんか?

Hello from SATANAMA Lab. In recent years, growing concern about environmental issues seems to have encouraged more people to make eco-conscious choices in everyday life: carrying reusable shopping bags, recycling, and choosing products that are kinder to the planet. We want to make "upcycling" more widely available as one of those choices. Yet many people still ask, "What is upcycling?" Plenty of people are unfamiliar with the word. That is why, through our products and the information we share, SATANAMA Lab hopes to make upcycling feel closer to home—and personally meaningful.

How Is Upcycling Different from Recycling?

"Recycling" is probably a familiar term to most people. Many may think of upcycling as something similar. Although both involve reuse, the processes are very different. Upcycling Definition: Turning something that would otherwise be discarded into a new product with value. Method: Adding creativity and design. Environmental impact: Relatively low, as less processing is needed. Recycling Definition: Processing and remanufacturing used materials as raw materials. Method: Requires steps such as sorting, melting, and reprocessing. Environmental impact: Relatively high, as processing consumes energy.

In other words, upcycling adds new value while preserving the qualities of the material. Recycling, by contrast, breaks materials down into raw materials so they can be made into something else. Both are valuable approaches, but upcycling is characterized by a lower environmental burden.

Why Is Upcycling Attracting Attention Now?

In recent years, climate change has brought extreme summer heat and wildfires in many parts of the world. Environmental problems are becoming increasingly serious. There are many things we can do to protect the environment, and preventing more waste is one of them. Recycling is one approach, but as noted above, its processing stages consume energy and have an environmental impact. This is one reason upcycling is attracting attention. Around the world, the upcycling market has grown rapidly in recent years. In North America and Europe in particular, it is expanding across categories such as food, fashion, and everyday goods. The market was approximately USD 61.1 billion (around JPY 7.8 trillion) in 2024 and is forecast to reach approximately USD 128.7 billion by 2037. Upcycling is gaining attention worldwide as one of our choices for the future. Reference: Research Nester study https://www.researchnester.jp/industry-analysis/upcycled-food-products-market/5844

Upcycling: A Choice That Is Kind to You and the Planet

Upcycling offers more than environmental benefits. "Finding creative ways to use what I already have." "Continuing to use something I love in a different form." It can be an action that is kind to your own heart, too. "Something one person no longer needs might become useful or necessary to someone else." "I want to keep caring for something full of memories, even if its shape changes." We believe upcycling can honor those feelings.
